A view of the Prehistoric rocks at Brimham ( Brimham Rocks, Summerbridge, Harrogate, North Yorks). I used a 10x and 6x neutral density filter stacked together to get a nice movement in the clouds exposure was 117 sec at f20 in daylight

A beautifully crafted image with gorgeous tones and textures but I'm struggling with the composition Martin. :( The two foreground rocks dominate the lower half of the picture and although they are very nice rocks they are er, just rocks. The top half of the picture is given over to the superbly rendered clouds and they are a treat to look at, but, and there's always a but isn't there, it's those lovely weather-sculpted and precariously balanced rocks in the mid ground that I want to see more of. I can see that you have used the foreground rocks as inverted V to direct the eye into the shot but there isn't enough of those 'sculptures' to stop my eye scooting over them and into the sky - and then when I come back down, I'm back on the biggies.:( I so want to give this 10/10 but these little niggles are frustrating the hell out of me. :mad: Sorry too be a bit long-winded guys but I like to try and convey what I see and think.
 
I must come in here because this image does not, in my opinion, do justice to the Brimham Rocks. The two boulders, which in themselves are quite interesting, are taking up all the foreground and spoiling the view. I agree that there are lots of interesting tones but there seems to be a lack of depth and sparkle.
 
love the Lichen textures and think technically it is very good- what I wonder though is how you managed not to have people in it- each time Ive been there people have been swarming all over the placeLOL
 
I for one enjoy this image very much. I like the comp, tones, and texture. I always find this place interesting. We all look at images a little different, but this one checks all my boxes.
 
I have just re-read all the comments and must echo the very first one by Keith. It is also not possible to get a sense of scale, after all these rock formations are getting on for 30 metres tall.
 
This is an interesting post and nice to read the different views posted by members. I have found that photographing rocks, especially granite type, is one of the hardest things to do especially when lichen is present. Trying to keep all tones in tune and conveying the finished image as a true representation does take a considerable amount of skill during the editing process. Yes it would be easy to lift the tones (for Martin anyway) but is that the vision he had for the finished image/print in the first instance. I have found it is very easy to destroy the very delicate tones that present themselves in this type of photograph, so I am inclined to accept the author's vision and final edit as an honest representation of the scene.

Regarding the POV, again it depends on the author's intention. This is what Martin has chosen to post and I would be pretty sure that he has a few more from the same location which may well be closer to those great 30m formations.
 
Thank you for your expert opinion Norman duly noted, but I have to say that I like the image (i would say that ), yes the foreground rocks are big but that is what its like there, also you do not know what was behind them, I do, I think the the foreground rocks adds depth and I certainly do not think it lacks "sparkle" however I but take both yours and Keith s comments on board and respect them

I think you have taken Martins post the wrong way.

I would also say at this point that this forum is meant to be a friendly place where we can share and learn from one another. I do not believe that your post is in that spirit as it is written.

Norman if I have upset you in any way I do reservedly apologize, my post was not meant that way, however I am allowed to stand my corner and give my own point of view as you have.
