The History of Ilford

The moral of this story must be "if you want your company to survive keep away from investment bankers". The hyena's of the business world!

In July/August 1969 I caught a glimpse of the welfare and social care that Ilford provided to it's employers when I visited the factory as a member of the R.M.P motorcycle display team to perform in front of a huge crowd of their staff and families. It was their annual day off when the factory actually closed down for a day or so. Would this happen today - not a chance. It would interfere with shareholders payback and upset the accountants.

A poignant video of the company that actually explained things and why they happened. I didn't know where the name Harman had come from and assumed the name 'Ilford' was just because it was in the town of that name.

Also I can see how the price of materials, in particular silver has increased over the years and to make economies with its use, with less silver being used in the emulsions. Today on the volatile markets, it is around £55 -£65 and sometimes above that, per ounce for pure silver bullion depending on the markets which can be very volatile.

Enjoyed that Martin. A poignant tale but at least in effect, the company still exists. So often, in similar circumstances, companies have been moved overseas in search of cheaper labour forces.
