Tatty leaf

Not used my main (Olympus) camera for over 6 months - I couldn't even remember how to turn it on (true!)

I tried to create (from memory) several types of pictures that I used to do - and got nowhere.

My first attempt at a tatty leaf was ok but not something to be happy with.

So looked at an old Joel Grimes course I have on 'Still Life' and gave a bit more thought as to what I wanted. and produced this


My thinking was:

- a 'desiccated' background to suggest drought. (This is an added texture - original shot as a flat lay on grey paper.)

- (trying to) draw the eye more towards the top of the picture, which I regarded as most important part, by including a tad less of the stalk and brightening the upper part

It was lying on a grass verge, along with a few others, outside a nearby house.

Originally I went for several together but couldn’t get a composition that I liked. (Composition in still life is not my strong point)

So I chose the tattiest and went for a bit of wabi sabi.
