My desktop computer, I will be honest, is well into it's dotage, and if it was human it would be lining up for a funeral plan. I had it made to my specification in, I think 2007 and gradually updated as and when things stopped working. Push has come to shove, with the latest PS updates not being downloaded completely so they don't work. PS still works with the last completed update from November 2024. All RAW updates still load satisfactorily. As far as I can see all the latest updates involve some AI or similar, which I have absolutely no interest what so ever.

So if I continue to use it as it is, what are the chances that eventually it will come to a point where it refuses to work with the 2024 version as well. My laptop is bang up to date and eats the latest PS updates for breakfast which is fine, but my printer is connected via my desktop to Canon via my modem, and the laptop is not set up the similarly. I am extremely reluctant to spend £600-£800 just so I will get updates which I will never use anyway.

Your thoughts please.
 
Thanks for your reply Ian, but the reply is actually mostly gobbledegook to me. I am not really into computers. I am unashamedly analogue and cannot see me advancing beyond what I have the use of today. I don't need speed, only something that will work when I need to do something - slowly if need be. I am the sort of person with the mentality that does not understand hi-tech, but give me something that is mechanical, but has failed, I can take it to bits and providing the faulty part replacement can be obtained I can probably get it working again.

Hence my preference for film and my working darkroom.

I think what will probably happen is I will do most of the work on the laptop and save it to a memory stick and transfer it to the desk top when I need to print. I know the desktop is calibrated to my printer so what is on the screen it will be pretty close when printed on the paper, I t may sound a bit clumsy but better than shelling out possibly over £600 just to get updates I probably will not use to my advantage anyway.
 
Just a thought John, when I want to transfer images from my laptop or taken on my wife's tablet to my desktop (or even a phone), I just send them to myself on WhatsApp then save them. I must admit that I have never tried it with something as large as a RAW file but it certainly handles large Jpgs (20Mb). Also as an alternative, is there any reason why you can't reproduce your desk top Canon print settings on your laptop and connect it to your printer via WiFi in the same way. If you have an HDMI port on your laptop, you could then connect your Screen to your laptop via an inexpensive switch. That leaves you self contained for your photography on your laptop with a decent size monitor and using your desktop for whatever else. As I say, just a thought.

Well I always use RAW files to start with and they can be massive, possibly because my principal camera is D800, Thanks for your input but it does not really answer my original question.

The way I see it is because I was up to date as from 2024 that is part of the building blocks for any later updates so they should remain in place even if I don't update to the latest AI rubbish. This in my analogue mind is like building a house and after a number of courses of bricks they suddenly become unobtainable in the colour I want. But adding bricks of another colour while it changes everything visually it does not affect the foundations and subsequent brick courses until they became unobtainable and the construction continued but in a different colour.

Sorry it is my analogue brain working overtime again. What I was really thinking when I posted the original question I suppose was. Are they likely to cease providing the programme up to, as in my case, 2024 is this not likely to affect everything that came afterwards. There must be others in the same position as myself. I simply don't need anything else - I don't even use a fraction of what they provide now.
 
To answer your original Q. I suspect that if you have the 2024 version working, it will continue to do so. The problem you might face will be if you find that it is no longer supported or if for some reason you want to re install it. That version is likely to be no longer available. What I offered was an alternative to using a memory stick in your present circumstances and a possible way forward which would remove the worry addressed by your "original Q". Don't make the mistake of believing that AI is only about producing something artificial. Many of the tools that Adobe have added just use AI to do things that you would normally do but in a more effective or/and a more accurate or/and a quicker way. Just trying to offer the thoughts you were asking for.
 
As it stands at present the only time I will need to reinstall it is with a new computer and I can say for certainty that is not going to happen too soon. Unless it all implodes after typing this!

I still use my laptop which has the latest version of PS installed. It is a case of PS and Windows them selves have cost me a lot of money when they up-dated their system, other things have stopped working although there was nothing wrong with them. They had to be replaced with newer versions of the same thing, so I'm putting it off for as long as I can. I am talking about scanners, printers, graphic boards, etc. Plus they are not cheap. I would rather spend it on film, paper and chemicals, It is certainly more productive for me. Unfortunately there are time when a computer is helpful,

Digital photography is certainly for me, not a cheap alternative to silver based printing. as they would have some folk believe.
