Blimey, following this conversation, I think I need to get out more, as unlike some of the members at my local camera club, I do nearly all my basic "enhancements" on Picasa or GIMP, and even then I tend to "wing it " most of the time to get the effect I want, hats of to you Guy's and Gals who actually know what you are doing.
At some point I will make a point of getting to grips with one of these editing suites as I know they can be an invaluable tool, more patience required me thinks

If you can produce what you want with your existing software then not a great deal of point in changing. And if you do move to Photoshop, then the learning curve can be very steep.

But, if you want to have a lot of choice regarding what your final image will look like, then Photoshoot, DXO and the like become pretty well essential (in my view)

I find I can do 99% of what I want just in Lightroom, having taken time to learn it proper! Much easier than every other program I have tried ( but I’m not plugging Adobe here as I hate the subscription model and will keep exploring the alternatives)

I use PS and have taken the time to learn what is relevant to me, that's important, you have to find a way that suits you. However if you are a Nikon user then their very own raw converter has it's own editing tool's which utilize the point technology and seems to work quite well. They have just launched a new version which is free to download.
