Long-term Project

Having been inspired by some images on the Royal Photographic Society's Contemporary page on Facebook, I have begun to look for "Transition Spaces", the bits between rooms and places (stairs, doorways, corridors..), and how light is showing up textures and shapes, and making you wonder what's round the corner.. I have printed some already and mounted them. I like them, but the reaction of others is perhaps not so enthusiastic.. Anyway, here is one of the first images in my "collection" Transition Spaces 003s.jpg

I like the idea and I expect there are lots of possibilities. This image is nice and simple but seems a little bit flat and I am not sure if I want to go down those stairs.

I can see your attraction to lines, shadows and angles. A terrific idea for a series and goal when going out to shoot. On this particular image, I'm feeling it's a bit cold and clinical, sort of like an office building or hospital. For me, the interest would be with antique or historical places, I think. But now I'll start looking for ideas that you have generated!

Yes a great idea and it can be so difficult to find those interesting shapes. I can see why you were attracted to this image so a good start to your little project.

When these sort of images are done well and almost abstract in presentation I find the interplay between form, line and tone fascinating and this image has them all in spades, a cracking shot Trevor.

Thanks for the comments. As expected, a bit of a mixed reaction. I have printed the above image to A3 on Fotospeed Platinum Baryta paper and think it looks good. I am particularly pleased with the fact that it was taken on an Olympus compact camera at f2 hand-held, and yet the print is sharp and the depth of field, tonal range and contrast seem good - to me, anyway!
