I do not believe that posting should implicitly assume that the author necessarily welcomes critique or criticism. But if the forum believes that it does then it's not for me and so I'll bow out of this otherwise quite nice forum
it's always very constructive and friendly - UNLIKE most forums - no need to depart :)

In reality no-one likes criticism.
I do as well

if I want likes I go to facebook but it does nowt to help me improve

When I consider how crap my mono work was when I first joined this forum ( in its previous incarnation) and how genius my work is now (lol- I mean VASTLY improved) it is entirely down to the constructive criticism I got on here. I didnt have to agree and sometimes didnt but an environment where peope feel free to say exactly what they think of a photo and how it can be improved without causing any offense is a rare jewel indeed

On the other hand, without expert photographers as well, there would be nobody to learn from.

But, from time to time, it can be very useful to see images that have been perfected, to the satisfaction of an experienced photographer, so that folks can see how things should or can be done. If you scare off more accomplished photographers who are rightly proud of their results, you will never have anything to aspire to.

I'm willing to bet that there are some here who would criticise an Ansel Adams image, just because they feel that no image can ever be perfect in their eyes.

Folks may not like how an image has been processed but, just as Martin seems to revel in soft old tech images without too much criticism, I would rather see well produced, clean and sharp images. Different strokes for different folks.
I'd criticise Ansel Adams images if I had anything constructive to say ( highly unlikey though that may be) why not and I doubt he was too up his own to accept it in the vein it was offered ...

Martin gets little criticism because he's shit hot at what he does as is Ian and many others on here. (All the same I have very occasionally criticised his shots , without fear of offence because you get to feel you know the locals well.) It is inspirational to see perfected images, its also inspirational to know you can question the choices of the masters and not get shot down in flames

There are some Ansel Adams images that I think are banal and lacking in originality, but I suspect some of this is because his archive has been over published by those desperate to trade on his name. These images wouldn't have been published under other terms. Others are spectacular particularly given the restrictions he had to deal with.

I would also point out that clean and sharp don't equate to well produced, after all there is nothing worse that a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.

In terms or artistic interpretation you should be prepared to learn from all, some 'experts' are arrogant and opinionated and can restrict the gullible's perspective.

Martin, I noticed it was gone. I'm for it being removed. I used the "Like" primarily for images—ones that were good, not great, but well done—to acknowledge the effort to make the image and share it. Also, for comments I agreed with. Indeed, that could be done in a few words.
Topics and images that moved me to remark were usually something exceptional to me, whether good or bad. I'm a positive person but not a big talker, so I try to reply with encouragement, and if the member asks, sometimes I'll offer my 2₵, pence for you. I come here to see what good people who share my interests have to say and see the work they produce. It's a nice place. Thank you!

I haven’t been on the site for months and am rather amazed that this thread, which started on 8 Feb, 2025, is still going.

(Speaking as a boring old fart ….) I remember Keith saying that you will get better quality (ie relevant to you) feedback if you say what you were trying to achieve with an image.

I failed to do this in my recent postings: ‘The unimportance of ordinary people’, and ‘5’ (but have to say I still got useful comment).

But that was because it was one of the many (photographic) things I have forgotten.

I still see this forum as one for learning, and I have learned loads from both Ian and Martin, and from others. Most recently from Glenn on blown out highlights.
