Crash Bath

Not been out due to the furnace like weather over here this last week. But I thought I would share this photo taken back at the end of May. One of the joys of installing the pond in my garden last year has been seeing the Swallows using it to drink and bathe. Though being Swallows they do both on the wing at high speed. When bathing they literally crash into the water at full speed. This photo shows a Swallow a fraction of a second after doing just that.

I used a 300mm zoom at 300mm and a shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second at ISO 10000, which was the fastest I could manage on that day. As you can see it turns out that it wasn't quite fast enough. The other thing I should mention is that this is a huge crop from the actual image so represents a tiny fraction of the image area. Anyway here it is.

Brilliant. The idea and the capture make this more than any quality fall off - which if any, is minimal.
