One of my favourite places to walk and only about 2 miles away from where I live. Tranquil now, but in its day it would have been heaving with coal tubs, ponies and, grimy faced miners. The pit closed here in 1975 (East Tanfield) and it has largely returned to nature. Even in high summer (yes it does get warm!) the number of people who visit are few and far between.
The Arch is not frequently pictured from this angle because it is very close to the water and it is a bit of a climb to get down down. Sadly someone has damaged the wagon and ripped planks off the side facing away from the camera.
(Kentmere 100 ID11 @1-1 printed on Ilford MG to approx A4 Minolta XD7 and 35/2.8 Minolta lens)

It has, like most of the industrial age places in Durham - spoiled for choice, but most of it has already disappeared, you have to know where to look. For a start 90% of the old railway systems - all gone
 
Hi John was just up there for two days with my wife, we stayed in Redworth Hall Hotel, had a look at Raby Castle, and Barnard Castle, then a trip to Durham to the Cathedral. I wanted to stop and photograph a few things, but my wife was frozen so only took a few pictures.
Nice set.

Were you testing your eyesight by any chance? :)

Nice set, John, though I get the sense from previous posts that the possibilities of the location are fairly limited?

Not at all. You just have to know where to go. Sadly I believe the Tanfield Railway has recently closed down unlimited access presumably on the grounds of the risk of accidents and although there are signs warning on trains at any time of the day and in both directions they still get idiots walking the line because they think nothing is running.

But Co Durham is steeped in history so I doubt If I will ever get to the end of it. I have only recently started to look at the lead mining industry which is still evident but obviously no longer in production. There is so much of everything where do I go to next?

(Don't even mention Beamish museum! that is artificial made up from items brought in from elsewhere, even some items brought in from out of the county. What I want are original sites as they are not cosmetically restored!)

In about 30 mins I am off the Causey again because there is one place I want to get to which is only accessible in winter when the grass is low, and
there is no snow and More about that later if I am to able to access what I want.

You must be referring a certain Government lacky/lapdog/spoiled brat who went there for that alleged purpose
