All That Jazz - 3

Heheheh. I keep telling the folks in our club photo not to insist on keeping the camera level - apart, that is, when it comes to horizons :p

Although I do think I would have an issue with slanted horizons in a landscape image......not exactly sure what you are saying here.

What I meant was, some people seem wedded to only using the camera in strictly landscape or portrait orientation - except for those shots when the horizon on the sea is visible or a lighthouse that should be vertical is involved, when they seem to insist on leaning slightly in one direction or the other.

But, when it comes to more "creative" framing, as with these musicians, all of a sudden, because there is nothing strictly horizontal or vertical in frame, they then seem to insist on being incapable of turning the camera enough to better frame the subject.

For some more abstract shots, I've even been known to rotate the camera up to 45° !

Thanks for the explanation, Joanna. I suspected I wasn't following what you meant correctly.

I like the toning and focussing, but as a former saxophonist I have a problem with the camera angle...imho, they seem just to play in a quite unnatural position...

The framing is intentional, to give a dynamism to the image. One of those times when a photograph isn't 100% "factual" but more artistic. And I have also seen many musicians play at all sorts of angles when the emotion takes them.

I wondered if they were sitting down. You wouldn't want to bash your favourite Selmer against the side of the chair, especially that big bari. Any contortion to avoid that happening will do ...

Lovely shot Joanna.
