Across The River

I thought this looked familiar. I live only 7 miles west of Durham and the riverside walk is one of my favourites (Especially at this time of the years when all the students are away and you don't run the risk of being pushed into the river by the the runners who use it as a training ground) If I am not mistaken this is the Old Fulling Mill just below the Cathedral. The high contrast is well held in the tree leaves because that is what it is like and even the dark shadows don't look out of place, again because that is what it is like.

Plus 1 from me. Perhaps a little more detail in the shadows but fundamentally, a nice capture.

Very bright and sunny day it was as well.
 
I actually think the shadows are right. Living there I have seen the river and the buildings on the edge of the water in all states. Under the trees it can get very dark when the leaves are in their prime. Almost as dark if you were driving you would need lights on. That aside, the dark shadows almost form a frame to highlight the subject in the centre - the mill.

The comments I have received here are very encouraging this photpgraph will be entered in to the first open competition at the camera club I am a member off.
 
I was down there this morning around 11am cloudless sky with the sun beating down and too a couple of colour pictures (film) that I am going to process this evening now it is cooler.
When I got back to the multi-storey car park, the onboard thermometer told me it was (only) 27C but as soon as I drove out it missed the intermediate numbers and stuck at 35C and only when I got home (800 feet up) it was a more reasonable 29c.

The amount of green algae growing on the surface of the River Wear came as a surprise seeing that there was still quite a steady flow downstream.

When I was there I thought the river was very slow moving and a bit low.
There was a lot of greenness in the water, and it did not look too inviting.
I have spent lots of time on rivers in my life, Yorkshire and Scotland, mostly freestone rainfed places, that run quite fast with lots of white water, so that is what I am used to seeing.
I never saw any fish rise, and I was looking, because I always do, it is just a fly fisherman's habit.
So the heat and lack of rain is having an effect on all these things.
