1940's Cheese Grater Paper Negative

I always like the use of creative blur.....do you have a post that explains your camera technique? Just to give me a better understanding of how you go about creating your images? Will have to take a look around....sure I've overlooked it somewhere.
 
For this photograph, the blur was created by using a lens with a wider aperture (f/3.5) and getting close to the subject to minimise the depth of filed.

The closer to place the camera to the subject, the smaller the depth of field you will get
