    The Dolomites 2024: A 4x5" Portfolio and a story

In 2024, between Workshops and personal work, my wife and I spent about a month on the amazing Italian Dolomites. I first visited the Dolomites as a child, visiting multiple times; in 2017, I first went to the Dolomites as a landscape photographer and went back almost every year since, either...

    Cinque Terre & Tuscany 2024: a 4x5" Portfolio and a story

In October 2024, my wife and I spent ten days in Cinque Terre & Tuscany between Workshops and personal work. We have been traveling to both these destinations so often in the last decade that they always felt like home to us. We loved Tuscany so much that in 2023 we made it our actual home...

Northern Spain: a 4x5" Portfolio and a story

In September 2025, my wife and I flew to Bilbao in the Basque Country; after spending a couple of days there, we picked up our Workshop’s group and travelled west along the Northern Coast through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and up to Galicia, spending a wonderful week working on this...

    Ah those ratty apple trees..

A few weeks ago we visited a local farm who opens a small restaurant, for a short while, to celebrate the coming of spring when the sap is running. A new batch of maple syrup and the last of last years blueberries with pancakes make for a wonderfully sinful breakfast! On the way home I found...

    Nighttime Delights

Last week, I took my 1960s Spotmatic out for a bit of exercise. I had to wait a good while until this scene was clear of people and cars, but in the end, I got what I wanted. Pentax Spotmatic/FP4+/FX-55. Black and white points set in PS.

Having fun with post processing a flat film shot

Shot this in Bristol in August on my Yashica Minister 700 using Ilford FP4+. I got it lab processed and it was a bit flat (not blaming the lab) so brought up the blacks, did a bit of burning and threw in a white vignette to mostly block the background distractions. Not everyone's cup of tea I know.

    Light Bulb - 35mm - HP5

Knowing how the Kodak D23 is a soft developer which I like, I wanted to test it with HP5 using the Neewer LED panel as the light source. Rather than use the perspex diffuser, I placed a homemade scrim in-front of the LED panel to see if I could maintain a softer light source in the final image...

    Wire Fence

I love this time of year for the quality of the low Sun, it can be a problem with pinhole when it is too high, they have a tendency to flair in an uncontrollable way, but when the sun is low it's not too much of a problem making it easier to shoot into the light. Pano Crop Portrait...

    Ackroyd's Mill Otley

This is part of the old Spinning Mill with the old Chimney still standing, windows now boarded up and ready for development (more offices I guess). The earliest known mill on the Ilkley Road site was constructed by a Jonas Bates in the 1730s. The mill has been here over 200 years. Voigtlander...

Ir Film + Flash, Was: New To Infrared, Suggestions Needed

I've had a couple of rolls of Rollei infrared film (135 format) in my freezer for a few months, have acquired a Hoya R72 filter, and just purchased a Sunpak 622 Pro strobe. Today I was the lucky winning bidder on an IR head for the strobe. The plan is to shoot IR in low-light situations à la...
