Photoshop won't save as jpeg

Probably should have made myself clearer.

Maybe I'm cracking up but I thought that when I had a 16 bit tiff I could save it directly in a wide range of formats, including jpeg.

Now I only get ?three options - tiff psd and ?large file (not at my pc so can't check).

The query I found suggests it's something to do with a recent PS update.

My post was intended to help anyone having the same problems, and let them know it seems to be not just them.

To move to a JPG file, remember this is going to be converted down to 8Bit. In Photoshop, either use the Save For Web option (this option will go soon) and make sure to check the Embedded profile option

Alternatively, try and use the Export As which is the "New" dialog to replace the Save For Web

You can also use Save As but you will need to manually choose JPG from the drop down list of options

Thanks Ian

I must be cracking up. I could have sworn that for ages I have just used 'Save as' and an option was jpeg.

Yes, I have recently experienced this JPG Fiasco. I then Save for web. To JPG and everything is fine. I am glad that you have written about this. I didn't realize it was Photoshop doing. Thank you

I've been doing it the long winded, but maybe wrong way. When my finished edit is a 16 bit file, RGB or grayscale, I just go into Image/Mode and change it to 8 bit. Then save as JPG. Is this ok? (Making sure the profile is SRGB).

There is no such thing as a 16Bit Jpeg

If there is no such thing as a 16 bit Jpeg (I know this) I would have thought it would be an automatic function in the software to change it to 8 bit if you wanted to save it to. Wake up PS!

Thanks - didn't know about this - I currently save as a jpeg using 'File - Save a copy' - which gives loads of options, including jpeg. :)

My advice it to learn and use the Export As found under the File Menu because some of the other methods are now "Legacy" and will disappear in future releases

Ian, I tend to use your picture frame plugin and save as jpeg when I want to send an image to someone or post it on here.

??does that achieve the same aim as 'Export as'?

The Frame will only place the image inside the frame.
It's up to you how you then get it out of Photoshop as a jpg.

As the Export As will be the New save as in future, now might be a good time to become friends with it so you are ahead of the game

Ah, ok thanks - I now understand the distinction you are making (as usual, it's taking me some time to get there:))

Will start being friendly with 'Export as':).
