Waterproofing

I have an elderly knee length (about 25 yrs old) Gortex lined, walking smock. Until recently it was still 100% waterproof but has developed a small leak which oddly is nowhere near a seam. Last April it saved me from a soaking and it was put away after drying (on a plastic coat hanger) and was not used again until this last weekend. The leak, more of a seepage, is enough to make me feel uncomfortable after about 20 mins from left shoulder down as the water soaks through. Has anyone ever had a similar problem and were they able to cure it. Is there any paint on sealant that can be used. Because it is in such good condition otherwise elsewhere with non of the seams leaking , I am loath to throw it out. When I bought it it was quite expensive for the time - around £75 Similar new ones now are above £140+

Are you sure the seam isnt the cause, as many have experienced water doesn't always follow the most obvious path. There are reproofing solutions, Nikwax is one I have used before. You spray on and then either air dry or you can tumble dry. They tend to stop water being absorbed into the top layer and away from any seems. With less water getting to the membrane it may extend the life of your coat.

Is the white Goretex membrane visible from inside the coat, you may want to check it. I had one jacket in which the membrane started to disintegrate after approx. 10 years, for which there is no possible repair. I did try and claim on the manufacturers "lifetime" warranty, however they explained it was the products lifetime - not mine !

Absolutely sure. The leak is in the upper part of the back and at least 8" from the arm/collar seam. Inside the jacket that area is wet as is the area below where the water has dripped. When it does, leak it shows a darker area that disappears after it is dried out. The white membrane is visible and appears to be intact

I came across a way of restoring the waterproofing on the web shortly after I posted my inquiry by washing the garment (No detergent) according to the instructions inside on the lable then not tumble drying it just allowing it to dry naturally. Unfortunately there is no lable! I have an idea that this only applies to garments that have some sort of textile/padding covering. My walking jacket doesn't have any lining or covering

This is based upon a Goretex lined motorcycle jacket I use which is 19 years old next year. that is always washed whenever it is needed/dirty and dries naturally and that has never leaked even in heavy rain when riding the bike.
