Producing this image , for me, killed two birds with one stone:

- developing a method of photographing largish backlit images with a black background

- shooting a portrait without a face (I'd seen this type of image somewhere on the internet and wanted to have a go.

I've done backlit images of smaller subjects eg flowers using this method:



but I didn't have a large enough flash/soft-box combination to have a large black background with some of the soft-box around the edge to allow light to fall on the subject.

I solved this by using two soft-boxes. No doubt other solutions exist.

In that case I like the anonymity of it. The photographer in the photograph is always unseen.

Glenn - I’ve had another go at this style, trying to correct possible errors eg I hadn’t included a ?mask to help prevent light from the soft box entering the camera.

I might enter it in a club competition next year with the title:

‘The photographer in the photograph unseen’

Very deep:) (And not something I’d thought of)
 
I wish you well with it and hope you do better than I did last Friday. Six entries but none to the judge's liking. Hey, ho.
 
Very rarely do I agree with judges (and not only on my submissions) - so I came to the conclusion a long time ago that I should only enter stuff that I like and not what I thought would ‘win’.

But even then I only rarely got any useful feedback ie comments that would help me improve it to make it more like what I was aiming for.

Having said that I am almost certain to enter some next year just to see if things have changed
 
Regarding Judges, and not always agreeing with their views, we have started having more club critique evenings which have proved very popular, I realise Judges are part and parcel of many serious inter club competitions, but our critique evenings are also interesting and fun.
 
The Leicester and Leicestershire photo club had a competition with a B&W projected section doing entered it as only 75 pence to enter.

Didn’t even get through the first cut - I’m now hoping it will do very well in a club competition next year just to have my prejudices confirmed :eek:
