I have started to play around with my new purchase, a little old point and press camera which has been modified with an 810nm filter. This image has had very little processing and I would welcome constructive comment about appearance rather than artistic merit.

I think to improve it Norman you will need a more diffuse and perhaps bidirectional light source
Also the top part is slightly OOF so you may need to focus stack at some point, depending how far you want to take it
exposure wise Id say you're pretty much there, you could increase by half a stop perhaps and open the shadows a little more without blowing the white areas
 
Thank you, Simon, that's the sort of info I am looking for. If I had control over the aperture I could probably improve the dof. Careful reading of the manual for the camera I found that there is a setting which shows a histogram when the image is viewed on the camera so that should help in settling the question about exposure. I am not sure at the moment how to diffuse the light source but two or more lamps will not be a problem.

Kitchen greaseproof paper is a good and cheap diffuser,(for mono, otherwise gives. a colourcast) that, and some masking tape to attach it
 
Whilst I see this as a way to diffuse visible light will it diffuse infrared light? At the moment I have an open fronted box made of a white, almost opaque semi-rigid plastic material with a desk lamp containing a 60 watt incandescent bulb shining at the box from above. The visible light, what little penetrates the plastic, seems well diffused but it seems as though the IR is not affected. Lots more research needed.
