Oops "A Self Portrait"

I was fiddling with the camera settings and twisting the rear view display (Canon EOS 600d) and ended up with this by accident. I don't do portraits, never mind self portraits, but this actually sums me up. I am often distracted so my full attention is rare.

Now my challenge is to repeat this with a sharper photo. Tripod as opposed to just randomly waving the camera about in my hand might be a good start!

I recommend "Why it doesn't have to be in focus" by Jackie Higgins published by Thames and Hudson. A fine read in my view although opinions may vary.

I rather like the softer focus indistinct effect In this image.
Hi Helen I did as well. That's why I posted it to see what the response was. Although it was completely accidental, I have to say as a self portrait, I identify with this more than I perhaps would have had it been pin sharp.

I have a long way to go with photography as I know so little, the phrase "soft focus" sounds so much nicer than "out of focus".:D

Traditionally, soft focus in portrait photography was achieved with Vaseline on the lens, or covering the outer part of the front element leaving a clear area in the centre. Less messy is to put a layer or two of cling film in front of the lens held in place with an elastic band.
