A little to dark (flatish in tone) as though its been under exposed and shadow detail pulled back, maybe open the shadows more John.

Welcome, John. Not sure what you're going for. The section to the right of the group of three, I don't think is necessary. Overall, I think "closer is better" but I'm not sure what your point of focus is.

Right ...... a very good question ..... 'what am I going for'. Well, I'm going for the essence/atmosphere of the paddock between races; but am clearing missing the mark.
So, here's a 'fix', of sorts. I've cropped it to remove the area to the left of the group of three, and brought out the shadows a little more. And yes, you're right Martin .... it was underexposed.
I've seen black and white photos that capture more than colour ones (more being less), but don't have a feel for what subjects are better. I think I have to spend a lot more time looking at things with black and white eyes, something I find very difficult.
