.......had this happen to you?

In the sixty years I've been shooting roll film Ihave never had this happen before, nor have I ever heard of it happening so I thought I'd post the question in the forum.

There was nothing untoward with spooling this film on to the reel until I took hold of the end of the film taped onto the backing paper and started to ease it off. It started to come of easily, too easily I realised, so I stopped and investigated with my fingers and I was horrified when I realised it was the film that was tearing - not the tape coming off the backing paper. I managed to get the tape off from the other end and just spooled it as carefully as I could and developed it.

I'll drop an email to Iford tomorrow to see if this is a one-off or a known problem.

UPDATE:

I contacted Ilford about this issue and they responded by thanking me for bringing it to their attention and saying that after investigation they cannot find any reports of the problem with tearing from that or any other batch of 120 film. They kindly offerred me some free films as a gesture of goodwill which I declined on the grounds that I didn't lose any imagery on the film and all it cost me was an email.

I had this happen once last year but I quickly realised and used a pair of scissors to cut the taped area off. I’m pretty sure it was Ilford film too but can’t be sure.
