Gymnocalycium Cactus

One of my numerous passions is for cactii. Ever since I was a child they have fascinated me. I don't have a large collection though, just 30 or 40 plants. Anyway, earlier this year I was in the local garden centre and this cactus caught my eye. It had no sign of any flowers and was un-named as well. As you can see the plant is rather uninspiring, but it had one big advantage in that it was very cheap, so I decided to take a chance on it.

As you can see from the photos it has rewarded my faith in it. So I thought I would share with you all. I admit it looks better in colour because of the delicate red and yellow centres, but as the petals are almost white I think it makes a half decent monochrome image.

As you say, some if these plants just look like a sort of green sea urchin ,but can suddenly produce amazing flowers .
My wife also likes cacti, we have quite a few, although I'm not so much of a fan , as it's always me that gets my fingers harpooned when she wants them re potted.

Wear heavy leather gloves, Bozzy :)

It is always a surprise when a cactus spreads out a blossom and rewards the care. I use to give them too much water…
