Apart from the historical interest, what I liked about this collection of photographs is his method of getting closer to the people.

He rented an old shop in the area and opened it at the weekend offering free photographs.

Fascinating collection. I must admit that I find the Pig Killing series disturbing but I know, as a meat eater. I shouldn't. It's a fact of life.

I came across Nattering in Paradise when I was a student back in the '80s and, having grown up in a South London suburb, remember thinking "So what? Why would anybody do this? Or find it interesting?". Forward 40 years I have a copy in my bookcase that I refer to on a regular basis. I guess the moral is to photograph the ordinary and to present it nicely, warts and all, while we still can.

Cue Martin Parr and Chris Killip.

These are documentary photographs to a fault. There is much potential interest in the subjects, but I'm afraid I find them almost unrelentingly dull.

Yes, often this kind of stuff is of more interest when it’s viewed 20+ years after being taken
