Butcher's Carbine - focussing scale question

My sister gave me a Butcher's Carbine camera when I visited her at Christmas. Butchers were a British company that became Ensign. It takes both film and has a hatch for using plates. The film aperture is 3 1/4"by 4 1/2" and the front standard has vertical and horizontal movements. The lens is an Aldis uno.

The focus scale is on a long slide and at the back it has a two position adjustment with two positions labelled "F" and "P". Does anybody know what that is for please? I note the adjustment rail supporting the focus scale is a lot longer than it needs to be to simply calibrate the infinity focus position. Perhaps this is a clue.

F is for Film
P is for Plate
