A Cross Dog

It's a bit small to appreciate Steve and I must be tired but I do not get the title, please explain.

This is one of the reasons I dislike titles. I don't get this one and it annoys the hell out of me if I can't figure it out! I like the picture looks good on my little tablet and I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen tomorrow.
I didn't see the dog until you pointed it out Steve.
Keith, I tend to be with you regarding titles but sometimes they do help. I am prepared to try an experiment and to post an image or two without a title, are you game?

I don't have a problem with 'factual' titles such as Windsor Castle' or 'Cumbrian Landscape' or the like Norman (it save me having to ask the question), it's the ones that try to direct me into seeing what the author wants me to see, instead of letting the images speak to me but yes, I'll give it a go when I next find somwthing to post and I'll try not to be so grumpy.
I don't think you are being grumpy Keith, thinking up titles could take up quite a bit of brain energy something I do not have any to spare, these days.

Obviously in a minority on this one as I think a good title adds to an image and I see no problem in encouraging the viewer to see what the photographer would like them to see.
If I can't think of a good title for one of my images i always feel disappointed.
A title also serves the useful purpose of making it easier to refer to a specific image.
When was the last time anyone saw a book that was untitled?

As I said Chris, I don't have a problem with factual titles and on books they are easier to remember than ISBN numbers . However, to go back to this image of Steve's. Once I got over being narked cos I thought the title meaningless (didn't see the dog) I took a longer look and I realised there was powerful symbolism within the picture. My thoughts went something like 'yup, it's a cross, made out of what looks sort of like railway lines perhaps - is that just coincidence or have they something in common?' I was a bit stumped for a while and then the penny dropped - stations! Railways have stations and there is a religious devotion known as the Stations of the Cross - Eureka! It's likely got nothing to do with how or why it was constructed and it's certainly not what Steve intended to convey but now the picture has meaning to me. Had I seen the dog I would probably have though 'canny title' and moved on and both Steve and I would have lost out.
Every picture I look at gets the same treatment because I like to understand why I like/dislike it and what it means to me and titles are a distraction to this process. Anyway, be assured there won't be a dissertation like this on all the images I comment on.

I love puns, allusions, humour in titles and other silly captioning
However here the problem is the image is too small and also the pooch is too dark. Also I think just a little luminance added to the cross would lift it a little
As it stands it just presents a bit of a mystery until you scrutinise it, by which time the humour is a bit lost
