52 Frames is a free website that sets a weekly project every week of the year - a colleague at the camera club highlighted it and I thought that I would give it a go.

Based on previous experience I'm uncertain if I will keep it going but it gives some relief from trying to get my head round light painting.

Apparently, they usually set 'Self-portrait' as the first project each year.

In more detail:

"As is tradition, Week 1 is always Self Portrait week (not a casual selfie) - we encourage everyone to lose their inhibitions and sometimes face a little discomfort of being on the "wrong" side of the camera. This is when you're telling everyone: "Hey world, this is me!". Whether you choose to portray your quirks, passions, or vulnerabilities, your photo would do well to show off a unique facet of your persona. It's a canvas where you play artist and muse simultaneously, unraveling tales through expressions, settings, and subtle details. It's about baring your soul in pixels, capturing the very essence that makes you, well, you! The magic lies in authenticity—embracing imperfections, exploring depths, and painting a visual story that speaks volumes. And a self portrait is a portrait of YOU taken with whatever camera you choose by YOU."

This was my attempt at this first project - not exactly what I was aiming for, but I had great difficulty in getting sharp focus and began to lose the will to live.

I aimed to represent how I feel when with some of my friends, who are right wing but who do not to want to talk about politics, eg, one has refused to talk about Brexit.

A shame this thread hasn't attracted more comment. I think it is an interesting idea and have started my own photo each week project over at flickr. Have been choosing my own themes though.

I like your first week's attempt, well thought through and powerful. Are you keeping it up? Posting the results anywhere?

I think this is excellent, Chris, the portrait is really well done, and I like what you've done.

Can't blame your mates for not wanting to discuss how they voted, it gets too heated and very polarised, very quickly. I spend a little too much time on a bit of a 'leftie' forum, and I have similarly silenced my avatar there!

I’ve done the first three and about to do the fourth = shot in the style of a film/movie shot.

Difficulty is I also want to develop light painting and only have so much ‘photo time’.

I post some on here If the image is b&w.

Agreed, and that’s why another skill I’d like to develop is ‘Street Epistemology’ = method to discuss controversial subjects in a constructive way (my approximation).

There is now a free course that I contributed to in a very minor way as part of testing it:

(to register/log in for free)

But a lack of opportunity to practice it means that I haven’t got very far with it.
