Black and white portraiture in Affinity Photo with Ivan Weiss

I found this tutorial with London based professional portrait photographer Ivan Weis while working through some Affinity Photo tutorials. Some interesting post processing techniques to retouch blemishes and bring out skin tones which I am sure would be applicable in other photo-editing apps.

Yes, I did. Not a great deal of change as far as I can see although support for the earlier version has ceased. Going forward I guess the two applications will diverge. The user interface is pretty much the same although the masking behaviour has changed. I guess the major things are the inclusion of non-destructive RAW editing and luminosity masks, neither of which I have yet taken advantage of.

The one thing I do like is the consistent behaviour across Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher. This has always been the case but I am using Publisher more often now for framing photographs and for creating photobooks. You can access Affinity Photo from within Publisher and vice-versa for quick-fix editing on the fly.

Are you thinking of giving it another try?
May do

Last time I had a proper crack at it there were some wierd colour issues with almost magenta skies. Not a prob in mono obv but I did find learning the new UI a hassle and unintuitive

I asked on their forums about the issue and asked tech help but they had no answer. Looked like a colour space mismatch to me but couldn’t pin it down so I suspected a bug of sorts but I can’t trust my images to something unpredictable

I tried all the Adobe alternatives at one point but currently and against my principles do subscribe as I’ve not found anything as easy to use

Not seen that issue but that is not to say it is bug free. I do a fair amount of colour work with it and mostly find a way to achieve the result I want.

I don't have a problem with the UI but I haven't used anything else except Snapseed and Picassa. It did take some practice to get into it, particularly coming from an "instant fix" environment to filters, layers, masks, overlays and what have you. I appreciate the versatility these days but there were frustrations along the way.

A V2.0 that needed paying for came as a bit of a surprise. Previous upgrades had been free-of-charge. I do wonder if paid for updates will become more regular, after all it is a business and repeat income must be very attractive to them.
